SURFERS IN PARADISE
Sun Jun 22 2008
Surfers Paradise 5 (J. Rose, J. Hayne 3, J. Jansen)
Burleigh Heads 0
HT 1:0
SURFERS Paradise boss Keith Garland is pinching himself this morning after his troops produced arguably the biggest shock of the season with a 5-0 trouncing of title favourites Burleigh Heads.
Sitting glumly at the foot of the table with only one previous win to their name, the form book suggested Surfers were on a hiding to nothing against the league leaders.
But after losing in controversial fashion last weekend, Burleigh fell victim to a Surfers side full of gusto, determination, and for once, good fortune.
Burleigh were missing several players due to suspension but will be kicking themselves that they didn’t turn their early domination into goals.
Surfers claimed the slice of luck Garland says has deserted them all season when they took the lead against the run of play through Josh Rose’s far post strike after 20 minutes.
With confidence coursing through their veins the home side stretched their lead soon after the start of the second half when Jason Hayne bagged the first of his treble.
By the time the game was an hour old it was all but over for Burleigh Heads when Hayne netted his second then completed his hat-trick with 15 minutes remaining. But there was still time for Joel Jansen to join in the goalscoring party with the fifth for Surfers.
To leading at the break and not chasing the game for a change was key to the result according to the Surfers boss.
“We got the breaks at the right time. Being a goal ahead for a change at half time gave us belief.
“Football is a funny game and for us to beat them 5-0 is a tremendous confidence booster for us.
“No-one gave us a chance and to be honest even though it was 5-0 it could’ve been more. Everyone expected us to roll over and die, but we didn’t,” Garland beamed.
