BROADBEACH HIT SURFERS FOR SIX

Sat May 24 2008

Surfers Paradise 1 (C. Clarke)

Broadbeach Utd 6 (C. Broadfoot 3, L. Glanz, S.Yanai, H. Edwards [og])

HT 0:3

BROADBEACH United’s early season jitters are nothing more than a distant memory now as Simon Kalaba’s men recorded back-to-back Buffalo Sports Premier League wins for the first time this term.

The comprehensive 6-1 annihilation of Surfers Paradise, who are still yet to win this season, is a statement of intent from Broadbeach who are winding up nicely as the campaign approaches its critical middle phase.

The goal action started early for the visitors when just seconds after Surfers spurned a great opportunity to take a fifth-minute lead, United talisman Chris Broadfoot started the rout. His cheeky quick free-kick sailed into the net as the Surfers rearguard hastily assembled their defensive wall and gave his side the perfect start.

Ten minutes later Luke Glanz doubled Broadbeach’s lead when he ran clear of the home defence and finished comfortably past Surfers custodian Jacob Logan.

Tim Dart’s dipping free-kick almost pegged back United’s lead, but five minutes before the interval Broadfoot’s precision pass left Yanai with a glorious chance to make it 3-0 and he duly obliged.

Despite the scoreline, Surfers had made a decent fight of it in the first half and more quality in front of goal may have brought reward. But in the second period their performance lacked belief, and from some, commitment.

Broadbeach did as any good side should and took full advantage of their demoralised opposition, turning the screw with a late goal flurry.

In the 80th minute it was 4-0 when Surfers defender Hamish Edwards drilled a right-wing cross past his own goalkeeper from close range. It was cruel on Edwards who was one of the few in the Surfers side to emerge from the game with any credit after a determined display.

Chris Broadfoot added the fifth a minute from time when some Keystone Cops defending by the makeshift Surfers rearguard handed him the simplest of chances. Seconds later Broadfoot was at it again and completed his hat-trick with a thunderbolt after again encountering little resistance from the Surfers backline.

Right at the death Cody Clarke grabbed a consolation goal to make it 6-1 but the final whistle couldn’t come quick enough for the home side.

After being stripped of three first choice defenders through injury then watching his side’s capitulation, frustrated Surfers Paradise boss Keith Garland was scathing of his players.

“I’m not using our defensive injuries as an excuse because if we had taken our early chances it would’ve been a different ball game,” Garland said.

“We gave them four or five of those goals and you can’t come back from that. I’ve told them that they have to take a look at themselves.

“After you concede a second goal you want to see character and see people stand up. I don’t’ mind losing but it’s the way you lose. You can’t hide from 6-1,” he added.

It was a different story for Broadbeach coach Simon Kalaba though who said the result was “just reward” for the work ethic of his players.

“The boys are confident now and they’ve worked out what we have to do to win a game. We lost our way for a fortnight earlier in the season, but hopefully now we’re back on track and can get better and better,” he said.
