MUDGEERABA and Coomera did little to warm the hearts of the diehard fans who braved the chilly conditions at Sid Bigg Park, serving up dour fare in a dull 0-0 draw.
Both sides were desperate for a win with Coomera looking for their first triumph of the season and Mudgeeraba keen to arrest early season form that is quickly eroding their finals chances.
Morgan Zeeno and Matt Chisholm were both guilty of squandering goalscoring chances for visitors Coomera and veteran Pat Hedges, who was thrown up front as a makeshift striker, also failed to convert.
It was a similar story for the home side with Shane Billing passing up at least two golden opportunities to ease the increasing pressure on his team who have only recorded a solitary victory this term.
The draw was Coomera’s third consecutive stalemate in the Buffalo Sports Premier League and Coach Steve Beever’s frustration was evident at the conclusion of the match.
“With Mudgeeraba’s form not up to much lately we felt we could come here and get a few goals because we haven’t been playing badly recently, despite not winning. It was another game of missed opportunities though and you can’t win games without scoring goals,” Beever said.
“I’m disappointed that we didn’t win and felt that if we had scored once then it might have opened the flood gates a bit and we could’ve gone on to get a few more.
“We played quite well and managed to keep the ball in their half a fair bit. We created a few chances but couldn’t finish them off. The pitch made it difficult and to be honest it was a boring game.
“We haven’t lost though so I suppose that’s a positive,” he added.
Mudgeeraba boss Marc Boelen at least saw his side stop the rot at the back after conceding quick-fire goals in their last two outings. A switch from a defensive trio to a more traditional flat back four certainly paid dividends, but it’s goals at the other end they need.
“Coomera did quite well in the first half which surprised me a bit. We were woeful but I felt we dominated in the second half and didn’t look like conceding to be honest,” Boelen said.
He continued: “This was a ‘must win’ for us today and we’ve made it hard for ourselves now. I think we need to take a bit of pressure off ourselves and relax more. At half time the boys were gutted and you would have thought we were 5-0 down.
“If we relax and try to play we might suddenly find ourselves in a better position and moving up the ladder.
“A couple more players lifted their game which was encouraging. On paper we should be beating almost everyone and hopefully that will come soon. I pity the team that we play when things click for us.”
